Oanh & Luke came from Virginia, for one day in three SaigonsOanh & Luke từ Virginia về, cho một ngày với ba Sài Gòn

Oanh is Vietnamese, Luke is American, and they live in Virginia. Their wedding is in the United States in August 2027, so they came to Saigon almost a year early to make their wedding photographs where Oanh's family is from. One day, three places: a European style garden on the edge of the city, the Fine Arts Museum in the centre, and the old Chinese quarter of Cholon in District 5. Two formal looks, one easy linen look, and a roll of 35mm film beside the digital cameras.

In short. They enquired on 27 August and shot on 8 September, less than two weeks later. Makeup started at 3am so the team could be on the road by 5:30 and in the garden for first light. A pre-wedding session in Saigon is US$880 for 6 working hours at 2 locations, with makeup, 2 gowns and 1 suit, veil and bouquet, transport and 40 retouched photographs. A third location, a venue outside the city or part of the day on film are quoted before you pay.Tóm lại.

A garden on the edge of the cityKhu vườn ở rìa thành phố

The day started in the dark. Makeup at 3am, on the road by 5:30, and in the garden while the air was still cool: clipped topiary, a stone fountain, a glasshouse with its doors open, and a salon inside with old paintings and blue velvet. Oanh wore a lace gown with a long veil, Luke a black tuxedo.

Gardens like this sit 30 to 60 minutes outside the centre, so they pair with one place in town rather than two. The drive and the entrance ticket are arranged in advance and quoted before you pay.

The Fine Arts Museum, a yellow building full of shadeBảo tàng Mỹ thuật, toà nhà vàng đầy bóng mát

The Fine Arts Museum in District 1 is a yellow colonial house built around a courtyard: arches, green balustrades, patterned floor tiles and long corridors of shade. It is our first choice in the middle of the day, and when it rains, because almost everything is under cover. Oanh changed into a full skirted gown, Luke into a white dinner jacket with a black tie.Bảo tàng Mỹ thuật ở Quận 1 là toà nhà vàng kiểu Pháp xây quanh một sân trong: những vòm cửa, lan can xanh, gạch bông và hành lang dài đầy bóng mát.

Inside, the galleries are quiet and the light comes from the windows, which suits film. A few frames of the two of them walking away hand in hand, past the display cases, ended up among their favourites.Bên trong, các phòng tranh yên tĩnh và ánh sáng đến từ cửa sổ, rất hợp với máy phim.

Cholon in linen, with a film camera of their ownChợ Lớn trong đồ linen, với chiếc máy phim của chính hai bạn

For the last stretch they changed into everyday linen and went into Cholon, the old Chinese quarter in District 5. They stopped at a herbal tea shop for a cold glass of nuoc sam, sat down at Ha Cao Kieu Ky on Lao Tu Street for a basket of dumplings, and climbed the mossy stairs behind an old shophouse. Luke carried his own film camera all afternoon, so some of the frames are of him photographing Oanh.

This is the part of the day couples from abroad remember most. Nothing is staged: the tea shop keeps serving, the dumpling cart keeps steaming, and the two of them are simply in it.Đây là đoạn các cặp đôi ở xa về nhớ lâu nhất. Không dàn dựng gì: tiệm sâm vẫn bán, xe há cảo vẫn bốc khói, còn hai bạn chỉ việc ở trong đó.
